Rope

Rope is a collection of fibres twisted together to form yarns. Yarns are then twisted together to form strands. Strands are then twisted together to make a reinforced length of material or rope.

What does it do?

Rope has many uses, the most general areas would be securing, pulling, lifting, carrying, and fastening. Within these broad fields, more specialist types of rope would be selected dependent on environment and application.

Industrial applications

• Roofing and construction

• Forestry

Non- Industrial applications

• Gymnasiums

Types

The type of rope depends on the application the rope is used for. Key points that must be considered are:

• Material – Natural fibres or Man-made fibres.

• Strength – Particularly important for lifting and pulling ropes.

• Water repellency - Keeps rope from swelling, useful in swimming pool lanes, marine and outdoor applications.

• Abrasion – Good abrasion resistance is important where ropes are used with winches and pulleys.

• Flexibility – Is an important characteristic for safety reasons. Especially in applications like climbing, towing and lifting.
