Stanley Stainless Steel Bi-Material Scraper, 1 piece

Stanley Carbon Steel Replacement Blades, 10 piece

Scrapers are hand tools used to remove a wide range of materials from various surfaces at home, on site, or in the workshop. A paint scraper or wallpaper scraper handles adhesives, sealants, fillers, and decorative coverings with ease. Many also double as floor scrapers, clearing dirt and stubborn debris from hard flooring.

As an essential tool for NZ tradespeople and DIYers, scrapers feature a metal or plastic blade fitted to a sturdy handle, enabling users to apply controlled pressure without damaging the surface.

RS New Zealand stocks a broad selection of scrapers from leading brands, including [Vikan](https://nz.rs-online.com/web/b/vikan/), [Facom](https://nz.rs-online.com/web/b/facom/), [Bahco](https://nz.rs-online.com/web/b/bahco/), and [RS PRO](https://nz.rs-online.com/web/b/rs-pro/).

## Types of Scraping Tools

The scrapers that tradespeople in NZ rely on come in several distinct forms, since paint, wallpaper, [sealants](https://nz.rs-online.com/web/c/adhesives-sealants-tapes/sealants-resins/sealants/), and debris each call for a different blade type.

### Paint Scrapers

Paint scrapers feature a robust, wide metal head designed to remove paint and wallpaper efficiently from walls and trim. A heavy-duty wallpaper scraper strips multiple layers of paint or paper without bending or losing its edge. These tools suit both DIY decorating projects and trade-level stripping jobs across New Zealand homes and worksites.

### Filler Knives

Filler knives are similar to paint scrapers, but their added flexibility lets them push material into and around crevices and outcrops. This makes them ideal for working with plastering compounds and fillers, particularly when levelling a surface before painting. Their thin, bendable blade reaches tight corners that a rigid paint scraper cannot manage.

### Razor Blade Scrapers

Razor blade scrapers feature a metal blade edge that is often replaceable. They suit removing high bond materials, such as glues, adhesives, paints, and putty. Because the blades are extremely sharp, many models feature a retractable design or removable cover. This offers handling safety similar to [safety knives](https://nz.rs-online.com/web/c/hand-tools/knives-scissors-saws/safety-knives/), making storage and use safer.

### Plastic Blade Scrapers

Plastic blade scrapers work in a similar way to razor blade scrapers. However, their plastic blade makes them safer for the user and gentler on delicate surfaces. A plastic wallpaper scraper suits glass, painted trim, and other finishes that a metal blade could easily scratch or gouge.

### Floor Scrapers

With a wider blade face, floor scrapers are favoured for clearing material and debris from flooring. They are often mounted to a long pole, similar to a sweeping brush. This design lets you scrape while standing upright, removing the need to crawl around, and adds extra leverage for tougher jobs.

## How to Choose the Right Scraper

Choosing the right scraper comes down to matching the blade material, width, and flexibility to the job at hand.

- Blade material: Metal blades suit heavy-duty paint and adhesive removal, while plastic blades protect delicate or coated surfaces.
- Blade width: Wider blades cover more surface area quickly, while narrower blades manage tight corners and detailed work.
- Flexibility: A flexible blade pushes filler into cracks and gaps, while a rigid blade delivers firmer pressure for stubborn material.
- Handle grip: A comfortable, non-slip handle reduces hand fatigue during longer decorating or cleaning sessions.
- Blade replacement: Removable or replaceable blades keep a razor blade scraper sharp and ready for repeated use.

## Applications of Scrapers

Scrapers serve a wide range of tasks across homes, trade sites, and industrial facilities in NZ.

- DIY and decorating: Homeowners use paint and wallpaper scrapers to prepare walls before repainting or repapering.
- Surface prep for painting: Filler knives smooth compounds into gaps, before various [types of chisels](https://nz.rs-online.com/web/content/discovery/ideas-and-advice/chisels-guide) are used to lift stubborn material before a final scrape.
- Industrial cleaning: Floor scrapers clear grime, adhesive residue, and leftover marks from warehouse and factory flooring.
