    Honeywell Micro Switches

Micro switches are mechanically operated electrical switches designed with an actuator and terminals called common, normally open, and normally closed. A micro switch is also known as a snap action switch, they operate by using a spring-loaded lever to open and close a set of internal contacts inside the unit.

How does a micro switch work?

Power is typically attached to the common terminal, this leads into the switch and energises the spring and because the spring is touching the normally closed pin it sends power out here, this is called a resting state. Once the arm is moved the power is then transferred to the normally open pin.

    Types of Micro Switches

In New Zealand's diverse industries and applications, micro switches provide essential control and safety functions. RS Components offers a wide range of micro switches, from standard to specialised types, to meet the specific needs of your projects. Whether you require a simple on/off function or a more complex control mechanism, our selection of roller lever micro switches, 16A micro switches, and other variations ensures reliable performance and precision.

    Standard Micro Switches

Standard micro switches are versatile, general-purpose switches used in various applications, from appliances to industrial equipment. They are known for their reliability and simple operation, making them suitable for basic switching tasks.

    Subminiature Micro Switches

Smaller and lighter than standard micro switches, subminiature switches are ideal for applications with limited space, such as handheld devices, medical equipment, and compact electronics.

    Miniature Micro Switches

Miniature micro switches are slightly larger than subminiature versions but still compact, offering a balance between size and durability. They are used in a wide range of applications, including appliances, automotive systems, and industrial controls.

    Heavy-Duty Micro Switches

Designed to withstand harsh environments and heavy-duty applications, these robust switches are built to last. They are often used in industrial machinery, construction equipment, and outdoor applications.

    Sealed Micro Switches

Sealed micro switches are designed to resist dust, moisture, and other contaminants, making them suitable for outdoor or challenging environments. They are often used in marine applications, outdoor equipment, and industrial settings.

    Snap-Action Micro Switches

Known for their quick and decisive switching action, snap-action micro switches provide a clear on/off transition, making them ideal for applications where precise control is essential.

    Sensitive Micro Switches

With a low operating force, sensitive micro switches respond to minimal pressure or movement, making them suitable for applications requiring precise triggering, such as in scientific instruments or delicate machinery.

    Double-Pole Double-Throw (DPDT) Micro Switches

DPDT micro switches control two separate circuits simultaneously, allowing for more complex switching operations. They are commonly used in industrial controls and automation systems.

    Roller Lever Micro Switches

Roller lever micro switches are actuated by a rotating cam or lever, making them suitable for applications where a rolling or sliding motion is involved. They are often used in conveyor systems, limit switches, and safety interlocks.

    Rotary Micro Switches

Rotary micro switches are actuated by a rotating shaft, making them ideal for applications where a rotational movement is required, such as in position sensors or control panels.

    Actuator types

There are various types available but the operating principles are the same, micro switches are actuated by a plunger, a button, a roller, or a lever.

    Operating Life of Micro Switches

Micro switches operating life is generally very high, being measured in millions of cycles, in most cases. Consumer products generally have lighter-duty micro switches than industrial products, but the low cost of these parts makes it easy enough to upgrade to higher mechanical life expectancies when required or when it's simply beneficial to do so.

    Applications of Micro Switches

Micro switches are used in consumer devices and industrial equipment. As small devices designed to carry low currents and voltages, micro switches are very commonly employed as safety devices, as they are reliable, inexpensive, and can open up a circuit when needed, preventing a machine from being turned on or a door from closing when someone is in the way.

A common application for these devices is in door interlocks, microwave ovens, safety interlock switches, or where a door must be shut before the power to the device will turn on. Micro switches are also used in levelling devices, such as those used on vending machines. In an elevator, these devices are used in the door as a safety switch.

Micro switches can be designed to be very sensitive. Such designs can be used in very precise equipment, such as that which measures the flow of air or other gases through a system. These devices are used extensively in industry, often in control circuits.

    • Industrial Automation: Micro switches are widely used in industrial machinery and automation systems as limit switches, safety interlocks, and position sensors. Heavy-duty and sealed micro switches are often preferred for their durability in demanding environments.
    • Automotive: Roller lever micro switches are commonly used in automotive applications, such as door latches, seatbelt sensors, and brake light switches, due to their ability to detect mechanical movement reliably.
    • Electronics: Subminiature and miniature micro switches are frequently used in consumer electronics, such as keyboards, mice, and game controllers, due to their compact size and tactile feedback.
    • Appliances: Micro switches are used in various household appliances, including washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerators, to control functions like door interlocks, water level sensors, and temperature regulation.
    • HVAC Systems: Micro switches play a role in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, acting as pressure switches, air pressure sensors, and limitswitches for safety and control purposes.
    • Medical Devices: Sensitive micro switches are used in medical equipment like infusion pumps, ventilators, and diagnostic tools, where precise and reliable actuation is crucial.
