Manometers are instruments used to measure the pressure of liquids and gases, and are vital for maintaining and troubleshooting equipment that uses gas or liquid to operate. Most modern manometers are compact and portable digital instruments that offer greater levels of accuracy, safety and ease of use than older types featuring a U-shaped glass tube filled with liquid mercury.

What are the features of manometers?

Modern manometers are handheld, battery operated and have clear digital screens so that results can be easily read even in awkward places or in bright or dim light. Hi-tech sensors and sophisticated microprocessors give highly accurate readings, while many come with software that allows data to be transferred to laptops, smartphones or tablets for storage or analysis.

Most digital manometers have memory capacity for data logging. A range of maximum pressure measurements are available, and some models are designed to be intrinsically safe for use in hazardous environments.

How do manometers work?

Digital and analogue manometers work on the same principle of fluid displacement. In traditional U-tubed manometers, water fills the tube before a gas line introduces pressure to displace the water. The height to which the water rises is then measured on an analogue scale.

The modern digital manometer can accurately reproduce this process electronically, with pressures typically displayed in pounds per square inch (PSI). They can measure absolute pressure, differential pressure, and gauge pressure. In conjunction with a pitot tube, a manometer can convert pressure readings into air velocity (FPM).

Where are manometers used?

Manometers are used to measure air, gas or fluid pressure in commercial, domestic and industrial environments to ensure that levels remain optimal and safe. They can also be used to troubleshoot system failures and seek out leaks, and are commonly used for food processing, research and education.

In refrigeration systems, digital pressure meters can gauge pressure, vacuum and temperature. They can also help to establish flow and static pressure in gas systems, or be used for pressure-drop testing in gas pipes.
