Spanners

Ratchet spanners are one of the most common hand tools and can be found in practically any tool bag. Also known as ratchet wrenches, they help the user apply maximum force with minimal effort. Their ratcheting mechanism allows for continuous turning in one direction without the need for repositioning after each turn, saving time and effort.

We carry a wide range of high-quality spanners from leading brands such as BETA, Bahco and Ega-Master. Shop for individual adjustable, ring and open-ended spanners or get your spanners as part of a set.

How do Spanners Work?

Open-jaw spanners, also known as open-ended wrenches, have a U-shaped opening on each end that fits onto the flats of a nut or bolt from the side. Each end typically features a different size opening. As for ring spanners, they work in much the same way, except their design also enables them to fully enclose upon a nut or bolt, ensuring a superior grip. Though open-ended spanners are better suited for work in tight spaces, offset ring spanners tackle this problem with an angled head ideal for access to fasteners in tight or awkward spaces.

Types of Spanners

Combination Spanners

These spanners have an open-end jaw on one side and a ring end on the other, both typically sized for the same fastener, offering versatility for initial loosening and final tightening.

Open-End Spanners

Featuring U-shaped jaws at one or both ends, open-end spanners grip two opposing sides of a fastener. Ideal for tight spaces, where fully enclosing upon a fastener is not feasible.

Ring Spanners

These spanners have a fully enclosed "ring" at one or both ends, providing a secure grip around the fastener's head, which reduces the risk of slipping.

Ratchet Spanners

Also known as socket wrenches, they are equipped with a ratcheting mechanism in the ring end, allowing the user to turn a fastener without removing and repositioning the spanner after each swing, speeding up work.

C Spanners

Notable for their distinct C-shaped or hook-like head, these tools are designed to engage with nuts that have notches or pins on their circumstance. Often used for adjusting gland nuts or bicycle components.

Factors to Consider For Choosing the Right Spanner

  • Type of task: A combination spanner is more suited for a general purpose task, whereas accessing fasteners located in confined spaces may require an open-end spanner.
  • Spanner type: Choosing the correct spanner type ensures optimal grip and leverage for the fastener. This prevents damage to both the tool and the workpiece, as well as protecting the user from accidental injury.
  • Material and size: A spanner built for heavy-duty use cases are typically made of steel, or special alloys for added strength and resistance to wear and tear. Meanwhile, aluminium spanners are meant for light tasks. Selecting a spanner that is too large or too small will not provide a secure grip, and may lead to slippage, potential damage or injury.
  • Ergonomics: A comfortable grip and balanced design reduces user fatigue and enhances safety, especially during prolonged or repetitive use.

Applications of Spanners

  • Automotive Industry: Spanners are essential for tightening and loosening nuts and bolts across all vehicle components, from engine assembly and chassis work to routine maintenance and tyre changes.
  • Aerospace Industry: Spanners are used for precise assembly and maintenance of aircraft parts, often requiring specialist torque-controlled spanners to meet stringent safety and reliability standards.
  • Construction Industry: Spanners are extensively used on construction sites for assembling scaffolding, securing structural elements, and maintaining heavy machinery and equipment.
  • Manufacturing Industry: Spanners are vital in manufacturing processes for assembling products on production lines, maintaining machinery, and performing repairs on various industrial equipment.
