EMF Meters

An Electromagnetic Field (EMF) tester is used to measure the radiation of an electromagnetic field. An EMF is a combination of an electric field and a magnetic field. Electric fields are generated by most electrical appliances when plugged into an outlet, while magnetic fields are produced when the appliance is switched on. EMF testers are used to diagnose any problems with electrical wiring, power lines and the effectiveness of electrical shielding.

RS NZ stocks a wide range of EMF meters from leading brands, including Keysight Technologies, Extech, and our own RS PRO.

Measuring the EM Field?

RS has a range of EMF testers suitable for home and office use. The frequency to which EMF testers measure the EM field is very important. Most EMF testers are constructed to measure a frequency range of 30Hz to 60Hz, which are some of the most commonly used electrical frequencies. However, there are EMF testers that can measure above and below this range to suit various application needs.

How to Choose the Right EMF Meter

When selecting an EMF meter in NZ, several factors should guide your decision:

  • Frequency range: Standard EMF readers cover 30Hz to 60Hz for general electrical and appliance testing, while specialist electromagnetic field meters extend above and below this range for research and industrial use.
  • Single-axis vs multi-axis: Multi-axis EMF detectors capture field strength from all directions simultaneously, reducing the need to reposition the meter and providing faster, more accurate readings in the field.
  • EMI capability: For environments sensitive to electromagnetic interference, look for an EMI meter with dedicated electric capability to distinguish between electric and magnetic field sources.
  • Accuracy and calibration: Where EMF readings will be used for compliance, safety assessments or professional reporting in NZ, confirm the accuracy specification and calibration certification before purchasing.

Applications of EMF Meters

EMF meters and electromagnetic field detectors are used across a range of environments and applications in NZ:

  • Around Power Lines: Measuring electromagnetic field levels in proximity to high-voltage infrastructure for safety assessment and public health monitoring.
  • Industrial Devices: Monitoring EMF emissions from motors, transformers and industrial equipment in manufacturing and engineering environments.
  • Home Appliances: Checking field levels around household electrical appliances for residential safety awareness.
  • Computer Monitors and IT Equipment: Assessing EMF and electric field meter readings around workstation and server room equipment.
  • Electrical Wiring Inspections: Diagnosing wiring faults, poor shielding and abnormal field patterns in residential and commercial buildings across NZ.
  • Research and Environmental Monitoring: Scientific and environmental studies using EMF readers to measure field exposure in specific locations or conditions.
