Hydraulic hand pumps contain safeguard valves that prevent fluid being sucked back in through the outlet.

Positive displacement pumps differ from centrifugal pumps in that they use mechanical energy to transfer fluid. If the displacement is on the forward stroke only then the pump is single acting. However if the pump displaces liquid on the forward and return stoke then the pump is double acting.
