Tap & Die Wrenches

A tap wrench is a hand tool that grips a tap or reamer at its stock and gives the user the extra leverage needed to cut or clean female threads. When taps are turned by hand in confined spaces, the wrench extends reach without compromising torque control, and adjustable models with a sliding T-bar let the handle sit clear of shoulders and obstructions. Die stock handles work the same way on the male-thread side of the job, gripping a round split die to cut external threads on rod or bolt stock.

RS stocks an extensive range of tap wrenches in New Zealand, spanning double-ended bar wrenches, T-handle tap wrenches, and die stock handles across small, medium and large tap wrench sizes. Sourced from leading brands like RS PRO, Facom, BETA, EXACT, and more. Every tapping wrench ships nationwide with fast delivery across NZ.

Types of Tap & Die Wrenches

The RS range covers the three formats that most benches actually reach for, so procurement teams can match wrench style to tap or die size from a single supplier. Style choice usually comes down to tap size, workspace clearance, and whether the job cuts internal or external threads:

  • Double-Ended Bar Tap Wrenches: Also known as bar wrenches, these are the format for larger taps where there is room to swing a longer handle. A single threaded handle draws the clamp onto the tap shank, and the double-ended stock gives even torque either side of the workpiece. Bar tap wrenches carry the largest tap capacities in the range and are the standard choice when a big tap needs to move.
  • T-Handle Tap Wrenches: More compact and built around a collet chuck that secures the tap. The collet has two parts, a threaded nose-cap and four collet fingers, and the nose-cap’s tapered thread makes the fingers clamp onto the tap shank as it is tightened. T-handle wrenches suit confined spaces or blind holes where reach matters more than throw, and are the everyday choice for small to mid-range tap sizes.
  • Die Stock Handles: A die handle used on the male-thread side, holding a round split die that cuts external threads on rod, bolt or pipe stock. The die stock has three set screws around the die pocket: a centre screw locks the die in place, and two side screws adjust the die’s diameter for a light chasing cut or a full thread depth. Available in a matched size range from small model-making dies through to heavier trade sizes.

Applications of Tap & Die Wrenches

Tap and die wrenches earn their place on the bench because hand-cut threads still solve problems that power tapping cannot reach: broken taps, one-off repairs, hard-to-access holes, and threads that need chasing without heat or chatter. RS supplies tap and die wrenches into workshops and trade sectors across NZ where the thread has to be cut clean and true the first time:

  • Hand Tapping in Confined Spaces: Blind holes, deep pockets and interior corners rule out most power-tapping setups. A T-handle wrench sat directly over the hole gives feel through the wrist for the moment a tap starts to load, so the operator can back off before a shank breaks or a thread strips.
  • Reamer and Chaser Work: Tap wrenches also drive hand reamers for finishing bored holes and chasers for cleaning damaged threads. The same square drive that grips a tap holds a reamer square, and the T-bar geometry mirrors the leverage of a T-handle socket set for controlled two-handed rotation.
  • Fabrication and Maintenance: Site repairs, mould-tool work and one-off jigs often need a specific thread cut into an odd piece of stock. A matched tap and die handle pair is key for exactly this use-case: an internal thread cut with a large tap wrench in the bar style and a matching external thread with a die stock handle, both hand-finished. Field maintenance kits often carry a bar tap wrench and a die stock handle together for that reason.
