### Why do I need a dash cam?

### What is loop recording?

Many dash cams use loop recording. Footage is recorded in segments that are between 1 and 5 minutes long. When space runs out on the memory card, older video clips are overwritten with the latest footage. Loop recording ensures that you never run out of memory.

Loop recording can make it easier to download and share footage as it is already segmented. Many dash cams have an integrated system to detect collisions, such as G-force sensors. In the event of a collision, the dash cam will save the video file so that it is not overwritten.

### What should I consider when choosing the right dash cam?

**Set up:** Most dash cams are installed in the vehicle with a suction cup that can easily be removed for use across multiple vehicles. Some models are affixed with more permanent measures such as double-sided tape.

**Power:** Dash cams are typically powered by a 12 V cigarette lighter socket, but some cameras can be hardwired to your in-car electronics.

**Resolution:** The video resolution varies by model. Full HD 1080p footage will capture more detail and record a sharper video than a 720p HD version.

**Lens:** Wide angled lenses will capture a wider view of the road.

**Light conditions:** Some dash cams have night vision which is suitable for night driving and low light conditions.
